Meadhbh's story: a lesson for us all
Today on Pages 1, 2 and 3 of this newspaper the Leitrim schoolgirl Meadhbh McGivern tells in her own words, with calm restraint and the minimum of self-pity, the most moving -- it is hardly too much to say the most beautiful -- story of 2011.
Much of it is a story of the suffering she endured through the years of her childhood from her liver condition. The fatigue. The restrictions on physical activity. The never-ending pain.
Then, on July 2 of this year, the cruel disappointment of the transplant saga which gripped the emotions of a nation. King's College Hospital in London had a suitable organ available, but the authorities here failed to supply an aircraft to take her to London.
