Maths teaching does not add up

HOW many teachers have the ability to make maths-based subjects -- and higher maths itself -- more attractive to the student who may have an aptitude for the subject, but little enthusiasm?
How many teachers love the subject enough to convey the beauty and creativity of mathematics to a receptive mind?
The consensus yesterday among experts at a seminar in Trinity College Dublin was that the shrinking numbers of Leaving Cert students choosing higher maths is bad for the country.
