Let's salute our everyday heroes
MAY O'Gorman (87) was asleep in bed at home in Cork City when some person or persons unknown set her house on fire, probably by pouring petrol through the letter box.
It was a crime typical of our modern breed of criminals. The perpetrators could hardly have born a grudge against an 87-year-old widow. Very likely, they simply picked the "wrong" house. In any event, Mrs O'Gorman had a lucky escape.
The gardai were alerted by a 999 call. Garda John O'Sullivan and Reserve Garda Peter Clifford arrived, broke down the front door, and rushed up the stairs through the smoke. They found Mrs O'Gorman suffering, like themselves, from smoke inhalation. All three were taken to hospital.
