Let victory inspire us all to recovery

Dunedin 2011 will go down in sports history on the same glorious page as Stuttgart 1988. The resemblances are more numerous and intriguing than the simple facts of two Irish victories in two different football codes.

In Germany, Jack Charlton's soccer team beat a fancied England side. In New Zealand, Declan Kidney's much-criticised rugby team beat Italy by a huge margin.

Granted, there were sharp differences. In Stuttgart, Ireland had to fight stubbornly to hold their one-goal lead to the end.
