Lenihan must stand firm

THERE was bad news for the Government on both the political front and the economic front yesterday. But, of course, the two are now inextricably entwined; and therein lies the dilemma and the formidable challenge that the country faces.
But there were positive glimpses, too, depending on one's point of view.
TV3's Millward Brown Lansdowne opinion poll showed a drop of 5pc in support for the bigger government party, but still left it with a 22pc share of first-preference intentions, which will actually come as a relief to some Fianna Fail backbenchers who awaited the poll with trepidation.
