Did Taoiseach Enda Kenny just inadvertently fire the starting gun in the race to replace him as Fine Gael leader?

Mr Kenny's reaching out to Sinn Féin, appearing to suggest Gerry Adams's party would be suitable coalition partners for Fine Gael, was quite a bolt from the blue.

The utterance provoked shock, disquiet, outrage and a backlash within the Fine Gael ranks.
