It's time to call a halt to this insurance rip-off
The business of spreading risk has occupied people's minds since the beginning of civilisation. The first record of a policy was found carved on a Babylonian obelisk, apparently in the code of King Hammurabi.
The ancients were probably every bit as baffled as to how the costs were computed. Today's motorists might feel that their policies may as well be written in the Hammurabian code, as far as making sense of them goes. Over the past three years, drivers have had to accept massive increases and the pain is far from over.
By any standards, these hikes are excessive. It is now 38pc dearer to insure a vehicle than it was this time last year.
