It's simple: don't drink and drive

The new drink-driving limits will come into force on Thursday night, in advance of the Bank Holiday weekend. The timing and the mounting of hundreds of checkpoints by the Garda Siochana are excellent decisions.

Last year, with 212 fatalities, was the safest on the roads since 1959 -- a date that, in terms of traffic volumes, amounts to ancient history.

But October was the worst month by far. More than one person a day, a total of 36, died on our roads.
