It's a dead-end street for Ivor

SENATOR Ivor Callely has talked himself into a cul-de-sac. His political career appears to be in tatters. The original question about his travel expenses led to a succession of fresh allegations which he has, so far, been unable to refute.

Having resigned from Fianna Fail, Callely -- who lost his Dail seat in 2007 -- will find it difficult to get himself re-elected next time around and there have been a number of calls for him to leave the Seanad.

Nevertheless, Callely's tenacity and ingenuity have never been in question, which is possibly why he heads the top-10 list for declared political donations, with Bertie Ahern -- who appointed him to the Seanad -- coming a poor second.
