The refusal of Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe to say anything about the decision to award the Aran Island air service contract to a helicopter company was, to say the least, curious.

The islanders are entitled to an explanation. The decision has been described as "disturbing" by the Irish Islands Federation. Locals also regard the decision as retrograde, and one which may damage their communities.

Mr Donohoe's refusal to answer any questions on the issue is all the more remarkable given the readiness of party colleague John O'Mahony (chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications) to voice his own thoughts.
