There may be a rush by some to suggest that the latest Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures point to a far more secularist country as challenges to orthodoxy become more assertive.

Others will argue such a stampede is premature for the figures show that Ireland remains predominantly Catholic.

Given the self-inflicted wounds endured by the Church in Ireland, some may be surprised 3.73 million people declared themselves as Catholics.
