Huge task faces new Government

PERHAPS nobody is deliberately trying to destroy us, but somebody is certainly making us mad. In fact, we have been driven pretty much to distraction during the past year by Government, financial institutions and public officials both native and foreign.

We wasted a lot of time trying to figure out how wide we should spread the net of blame. We spent even longer coming to the realisation that it didn't matter who was to blame, nobody was going to be brought to account in any great hurry.

This was a useful exercise for those who did not wish us to concentrate too much on the solution. It gave them more time to wear us down and convince us that we were all somewhat to blame, and so we all had to pay. We finished up the year with a €6bn Budget adjustment that certainly brought that home to what is left of the working population.
