It's the conundrum of being a member of the eurozone. Higher interest rates would suit the German economy as inflation takes hold, but not the recovering Irish economy.

Nonetheless, homeowners are being warned to prepare for interest rate rises as the era of cheap debt is now set to end.

The ECB rate is currently at zero - a boon to 350,000 Irish households lucky enough to have a tracker mortgage.
