Despair has a unique momentum and people have always attempted to get beyond its clutches.

But not since the Second World War have hundreds of thousands poured over Europe’s borders.

A record number of 107,500 crossed EU borders last month. We have given them the name of “migrants”, but they are mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, children and infants.
