Heavy cost of our thaw

WHERE water is concerned, the one thing worse than not having any, is having it pouring into the house. Tens of thousands of people are experiencing one or other of these nightmares. Some will have suffered both, with pipes bursting, and then their supplies cut off.

It is not, though, a case of water, water everywhere. There is not enough water where it ought to be -- in the reservoirs. An estimated 130 million litres has been lost; most of it as a result of burst pipes, but some from people running taps to prevent their pipes bursting.

All credit to the plumber who avoided getting into trouble on RTE's 'Morning Ireland' when the interviewer pressed him to say whether running the taps was effective in preventing bursts. Whether it is or not, it should never be encouraged, because of the loss it brings to the entire community.
