Harsh lesson from the Norris saga
DAVID NORRIS bowed to the inevitable yesterday and abandoned his campaign for the Presidency. It was the right decision, but thousands all over the country will regret the sad and humiliating circumstances in which the enterprise collapsed.
Mr Norris has long been a brave and stylish campaigner on serious and divisive issues. But he owes his enormous popularity to something quite different. He brings a little fun, a little jollity, into Irish public life. These things are at their most valuable at a time like the present.
However, they do not qualify him for the Presidency.
