Hang together, or separately
WITH less than two months to go to Budget 2011, time is running out for decisions on how to forge national unity in the face of a unique emergency. If ever we needed consensus and a determination to work together, we need them now.
But we have been badly let down by the political system as a whole and by Taoiseach Brian Cowen personally. Mr Cowen's response to the proposal for an all-party forum, put forward by his coalition partner John Gormley, reminds one of some of Fianna Fail's worst aspects.
The Taoiseach says he wants consensus, but he appears to define it as the opposition parties putting forward ideas for the Government to accept or reject as it pleases.
