Government calls time on super-casinos

The decision that was announced yesterday by the Cabinet to refuse permission for the construction of a "super-casino" at Two-Mile Borris in Co Tipperary represents a long- overdue outbreak of common sense.
Ever since An Bord Pleanala in its wisdom gave the go-ahead for the project last June, the prospect of this utterly unsuitable development has hung like a dark cloud over north Co Tipperary.
If the promoters of the Two-Mile Borris project had got the go-ahead then we would have been confronted with a 500-bedroom hotel, a "resort" casino and a race track just off the M7 motorway.
