Getting drivers ready for a safer life on the road

FROM next Monday, learner drivers must take at least 12 one-hour lessons with an approved instructor.
This, and other simultaneous moves, are on the whole welcome. Irish driving standards remain below-par for many reasons, including inadequate testing and amateur instruction.
Under the new system, the syllabus will include night-time driving. It takes only a moment's reflection to detect the absurdity of permitting someone who has never learned to drive at night to take to the road alone, or to carry passengers.
