Get well soon, Brian
FOR courage and candour, Brian Lenihan's radio interview with Sean O'Rourke yesterday scaled new heights. It will increase the enormous respect in which he is already held and the overwhelming goodwill felt for him and his family.
A lesser man forced to discuss a serious medical condition in the unrelenting glare of publicity might have oscillated between false optimism and real self-pity. Mr Lenihan acted with the dignity and openness that we have come to expect of him. He gave the details of his illness without exaggerating or diminishing any of its aspects, and made his brave response in a manner that might almost be called light-hearted.
"It's a growth I intend to defeat or it will defeat me." That phrase will find its way into dictionaries of quotations.
