Garda strike threat damaged credibility
Few could have foreseen that we might come to such a place where the criminal classes would be on the brink of being given a free day by the forces of law and order.
Worse, that the old, the vulnerable and the innocent might be used as bargaining chips, to suffer whatever the consequences. Yet, this week Garda Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan issued an order for all gardaí to turn up for work today. No such order should ever have been needed. Gardaí are bound by oath to do their duty to protect the State.
Extended meetings were convened with the threat of a strike hanging over them continually. That threat was finally lifted last night when, first, mid-ranking gardaí and, second, rank-and-file members called off their strike.
