Too many of those tempered in the furnace of Northern politics tend to be unyielding and set in their ways.

Arlene Foster, who has become the first woman to lead the Democratic Unionist Party, has shown that she is made from a different mould: progressive, though steely, and assured.

Since leaving the Ulster Unionists in 2004, the solicitor has filled the highest offices in government and proven herself both able and formidable.
