For sake of sick children, let's get this decision right

THE new National Children's Hospital is a "key priority" for the Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly, and today we have revealed for the first time the shape of the new building that will, it is hoped, be constructed on the St James's Hospital campus in Dublin.

It is a project that has, so far, been dogged by false starts and other difficulty, including An Bord Pleanala's refusal of planning permission on the Mater Hospital site, which brought the whole project to a shuddering halt in February of last year.

So it is to be hoped that this latest blueprint will, as promised, deliver the new €600 million facility by the end of 2018, although that date itself is now six months later than the original target.
