Food for thought on our future

Despite the Irish economy enduring its worst downturn since independence, food and drink -- our largest indigenous industry -- is booming. According to figures published yesterday by Bord Bia, Irish food and drink exports grew by 12pc to a record €8.85bn in 2011.

Of course it helps that food commodity prices are at close to record levels on international markets. However, that is only part of the story.

In addition to the traditional sectors such as beef and dairy, which recorded overseas sales of almost €2.8bn and €2.7bn respectively last year, we have the prepared foods sector.
