The billing teed us up for a Ben Franklin Budget - the man who originally exclaimed the virtues of early to bed and early to rise, etc.

The very people Taoiseach Leo Varadkar adopted on taking office - so the least they might have expected was a substantial cut in the cost of alarm clocks. Alas, they will have to be content with an extra €5 in their pockets.

This Budget was always going to be a bit different. There were strains of Fianna Fáil, the Independents and Fine Gael. But those looking for DNA traces from Mr Varadkar's 'Republic of Opportunity' will have to wait.
