Figures on public pay are a big wake-up call

As a small country the last thing we need is public and private sector workers at loggerheads with one another. If we are to continue to thrive economically we need an effective public sector providing the vital services required to sustain a good quality of life.

That means our public sector workers must be well paid and have good conditions of employment. But fairness and affordability must also be key concepts here.

Today we bring you a dispassionate report by stockbroker and financial adviser Davy. It tells us that public sector earnings, averaging €47,400 per year, are 40pc higher than in the private sector, where the yearly average is €33,900.
