Fianna Fail faces the stark reality
Micheal Martin made a crucial error when he invited Gay Byrne to stand for the presidency, only to be faced with a torrent of publicity followed by a polite refusal. The Fianna Fail leader has no good options now, only a choice of evils.
Yesterday his difficulties grew even worse. At the meeting of the special party sub-committee set up to consider the question, only Eamon O Cuiv stuck to the view that the party should field its own candidate.
The other members all thought, like the leader, that they should sit it out -- but with the option still open of supporting one of the independent contenders.
