FF overcomes 'state of denial'

FIANNA Fail should be well pleased with the findings of the Red C opinion survey in the 'Sunday Business Post'. After one of the toughest Budgets ever, while the country is still in recession and suffering severely from the effects of the credit crunch and from spending cuts, support for the main governing party has risen instead of falling.

Granted, it has risen from a miserably low base -- 23pc. Granted, too, that the current 27pc is close to historic lows. And all these lows came in the past year or so, as did the most dramatic development of all -- the loss of the status the party had held almost throughout the history of the State. It is no longer the largest party in terms of public support.

Still, ministers and backroom strategists are entitled to at least muted celebration and the utterance of the time-honoured phrase: "We must be doing something right"
