Faith in politics takes new hammering
YOU wait 20 years for the national parliament to tackle one of the country's most sensitive issues with legislation on abortion. Then you not only find the business unfinished after an all-night Dail debate. You find one TD embroiled in an unedifying controversy dubbed 'lapgate' which has grabbed unwelcome international headlines.
And you find a second TD explaining how he made a mistake and pushed the wrong button to vote the wrong way.
To paraphrase George Bernard Shaw, any one of those things might have been deemed unfortunate. But the combination of these events definitely smacks of carelessness.
