We don't live in an ideal world. In an ideal world, elections in a democratic country that prides itself upon the values of its national motto - 'liberty, equality and fraternity' - wouldn't be overshadowed by the threat of terrorism.

And that terror wouldn't frame the debate in the latter stages of an election campaign.

Instead, terrorism and immigration into France are dominant themes ahead of the first round of voting.
