Editorial: Time for measured debate on moral issues
The coming three months will be a crucial time for Irish society. Today, the Cabinet is expected to clear the text of one important bill and progress the general scheme of a second. Each bill is linked to the referendum on same-sex marriage due in May.
Our politicians have at best a mixed record in dealing with issues of public morality. If an issue can be parked or dodged, then that will be done.
But our politicians are drawn from our society and reflect our own make-up. The reality is that very many of us are reluctant to face up to these tricky moral dilemmas. But the world is changing around us and we need to discuss how we are going to order our society to take account of these changes.
