Donation ban must also apply to trade unions
The new Government has moved quickly to ban corporate donations to political parties. While its hand may have been forced by the fallout from the publication of the Moriarty Tribunal report, this is still a welcome, if long overdue, reform.
The notion that companies donate money to political parties for purely altruistic reasons is nonsensical. If this were the case then shareholders would be justified in complaining about the waste of their money.
At best companies are seeking to ensure access to government in return for their "investment"; at worst they are paying for specific policies and decisions.
