Deutsche Bank move proves worth of our graduates
THERE was some positive news to kickstart the weekend when Deutsche Bank announced the creation of 700 jobs over the next few years. This was the biggest single jobs announcement of 2013, which has more generally proved to be a good year for job creation. It is a major morale boost for the entire nation.
Clearly this is a vote of confidence in Ireland as a centre for financial services at a time when there is keen competition in Europe and the wider world. It was also very encouraging to hear that the high standard of Ireland's graduates was a key factor in the move. This message must also be read as pointing up the need to continue striving for excellence in education and to find innovative ways to sustain educational investment in spite of recession.
The announcement reflects well upon IDA Ireland and also offers a plaudit for government strategists who targeted international financial services in their job-creation plans.
