Danger of our brain drain
EVEN as more and more young graduates are being forced to leave the country in search of employment, the fact that students are turning in increasing numbers to science and technology subjects is encouraging.
It appears that, despite today's bleak prospects, young people have faith in the idea of a knowledge economy and have not lost hope in the future. Nevertheless, the Central Statistics Office tells us that unemployment among college leavers has almost trebled in the past two years and there can be no doubt that many of them are highly skilled people who will now carve out careers overseas.
They represent an invaluable resource lost to this country, perhaps forever.
