If you have woken up to the sound of a thud this morning, it may well be the noise of somebody's jaw hitting the ground having just learned of the latest innovation to save money within the HSE.

Never mind having a budget of €14bn for 2017: in its wisdom, it has deemed it necessary to cut the entitlements of breast cancer patients. That's correct, breast cancer patients are to be targeted.

Not expenses, not lunch allowances, not excessive use of paper clips, or Post-Its. No. Those paid the big bucks to come up with novel ways of saving have introduced new rules from today which will mean that vital post-surgery products, such as prostheses, bras and wigs will be reduced.
