Nothing in the rapidly changing world of technology stays the same for long but if there is one constant and unavoidable truth, it is that on the internet there are no secrets.

That is why the news that then Deputy Garda Commissioner, now Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan, used a Gmail account until recently is quite extraordinary.

As deputy commissioner, Ms O'Sullivan had responsibility for all crime and security matters, as well as State security and intelligence.
