Come on the Hoops!

Irish sports fans everywhere will be delighted with the success of League of Ireland champions Shamrock Rovers in qualifying for the group stages of the Europa League, the first Irish team ever to do so.

Just for good measure, the Hoops bagged a lucrative home tie with Tottenham Hotspur when the groups were drawn in Monaco yesterday.

For Shamrock Rovers, the success in qualifying for the group stages of a major European competition represents the latest stage in a remarkable resurrection. For almost two decades after they were ejected from their historic Glenmalure Park ground, the Hoops were forced to endure a nomadic existence. Uprooted from their traditional support base, there were times when it seemed doubtful if Rovers would survive.
