The Health Service Executive and Department of Health have a solid record of driving a hard bargain with pharmaceutical companies.

Although it was a difficult wait for cystic fibrosis sufferers, an agreement has now been struck to supply the medicines Orkambi and Kalydeco.

The Department of Health yesterday refused to say how much the cost of funding Orkambi - the most expensive medicine the HSE has purchased - will amount to.
