Cherish all our children equally

Last week, the managing director of the Irish subsidiary of international financial services company State Street Corporation, William Slattery, told a conference that 30,000 jobs needed to be shed in the public service to save €2bn.
Others have called for an even bigger cull. Emotionally this is a hard case to make. These are our friends, our neighbours, our relations, depending on the public purse to raise their families.
And on a practical level, this involves 30,000 earners who would no longer pay tax but would instead become a total charge on the State through unemployment benefits.
