The 500,000 jump in overseas visitor numbers recorded in 2011 signals the emergence of the tourism sector from recession.
Last year, this country welcomed 6.5 million overseas visitors -- the highest number since 2007.
Driving the increase in tourism numbers has been a combination of cheap airfares, cheaper hotel rooms and a significant reduction in the cost of eating out. Thanks to the recession, Irish domestic prices have fallen significantly and this is feeding through into the greater attractiveness of this country to overseas visitors.
