Cargoes of death

Yesterday's conviction of Michael Campbell, who was sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment by a Lithuanian court for attempting to purchase arms, demonstrates that the threat posed by the so-called Real IRA and other militant dissident republic groups remains very real.



While anyone following the presidential election campaign could be forgiven for thinking that terrorism was something that belonged to history, Mr Campbell's conviction makes it abundantly clear that such groups still pose a very serious threat to the hard-won peace on this island.

Unfortunately, as the Campbell case demonstrates, it is relatively easy to purchase large quantities of arms and explosives in many central and eastern European countries.
