Calling time on this shambles
BRIAN Cowen gave a shambolic performance in his RTE radio interview yesterday morning. But not because he stumbled over his words. Not because he had stayed up late drinking and singing. The trouble with the Cowen premiership goes far deeper and has reached a point where citizens are not only angry but frightened.
It was probably his worst interview ever, but the difference was one of degree, not kind. The problems it illustrated are not new. They have merely grown worse.
On this occasion, it was notable that he failed again and again to answer the questions put to him. For politicians, that is nothing out of the ordinary. They have batteries of tricks which allow them to appear to answer -- even to answer with apparent openness and candour -- while in reality giving nothing away.
