A sobering wake-up call to those sleep-walking through the political miasma in the North, and those responsible for the paralysis across the water, on Brexit, were given a timely reminder this week on the dangers of procrastination.

Garda security supremo Michael O'Sullivan warned in this newspaper that the threat posed by the so-called New IRA was the gravest seen in these islands for two decades.

That is some statement. His remarks were echoed by Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan yesterday, who agreed that: "There's no doubt about it, the dissident threat takes up a lot of our time, a lot of our resources. We need to focus on protecting communities and playing our part on the international threat." Gardaí will do what they must.
