At last, a little healthy news
WHEN there is good news on the health front, even if slightly tempered, it is a joy to behold. The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has found significant progress in the safe provision of services at most of the country's eight newly designated breast cancer specialist centres.
In recent times, there have been many promises of improvement, usually in the wake of some catastrophic system failure, but it appears the specialist centres are living up to the promises of the Minister for Health and Professor Tom Keane, who was charged with the job of improving cancer services.
Certainly, it is good to see Mary Harney rejoicing in the results of a report for once. She said it was reassuring that the overwhelming message from patients was positive and the report was a wonderful endorsement of the work being done by staff in the eight centres. She deserves the break.
