Taoiseach Leo Varadkar drew upon history to show examples of predecessors who took up office in mid-term and went on to be successful.

Sean Lemass for Fianna Fáil in 1959 and John Bruton for Fine Gael in 1994 were valid comparisons, even if the Rainbow coalition was not returned to office.

In a personal capacity, the new Taoiseach said taking up this highest office was an aspiration he had believed would be beyond him if he was himself.
