When the fox hears a rabbit scream it comes running - to hunt, not to help. That is what predators do: they kill and maim without feeling. Listening to Gerry Adams's chilling refusal to accept the ruthless killers who brutally murdered innocent farmer Tom Oliver should be sent to jail should serve as a warning to all those who would see Sinn Féin as a suitable partner in government.

Mr Adams has been an apologist for murder for decades. There was never a need to distinguish between the shooting dead of civilians or of unarmed gardaí. For several decades Sinn Féin did not recognise such distinctions. When one assumes the roles of judge and executioner such subtle details are of no consequences.

Such conscientiousness is the preserve of true democrats. Those who rightly abhor violence and do not hide behind weasel words of equivocation.
