A triumph that lifts us all
SUNNY days and long, balmy evenings: for once, a midsummer to revel in. But this month, it is on foreign fields that our sportsmen have given us something to celebrate.
It started with the bagful of medals that our boxers brought home from the championships in Moscow: one gold, one silver, three bronze. It continued with the Ascot victories of Aidan O'Brien and Johnny Murtagh, probably the world's best trainer and the world's best jockey. We had to wait until the fourth day of the festival to see them win, but then they won in style.
Strange to think how we have grown accustomed to their successes. We almost take them for granted.
