A special place for the bankers

Most of us would place the banks next to the Fianna Fail-Green government in the list of those culpable for our economic catastrophe.
But whereas Fianna Fail and its partners got their just rewards with their near-annihilation at the polls last February, the banks have continued to flourish amid the devastation to which they contributed so much.
On a fateful night in September 2008, the cry "save the banks!" was raised. It was obeyed -- to the letter. In the first draft of the then-government's response, the attempted rescue package actually included Anglo Irish, sometimes described as the worst bank in the world.
