A sad day for George
GEORGE Lee sailed into Dail Eireann last year on a wave of enthusiasm and optimism. Yesterday the tide went out and he departed, to borrow a few words from Matthew Arnold, to the accompaniment of a "melancholy, long, withdrawing roar".
Melancholy, certainly. Mr Lee had embraced a political career with sincerity and passion, if also, perhaps, with a touch of naivety. Yesterday it was sad to see his disillusionment with the political life in general and the Fine Gael party in particular. If it was also mixed with regret for the way he had handled or lost opportunities, he could be forgiven for that.
Last year, he abandoned a successful career in television. If, as expected, he now returns to RTE, he will do so in a less glamorous position. As misfortunes go, this one is no disaster, but it must sting.
