IF proof were needed that politics and the internet make a volatile mix, the Elysee Palace affair provides it.

A dubious piece of Internet gossip about problems in Nicolas Sarkozy's third marriage has exploded into a massive political debacle on a national scale.

The furore is further undermining the French president's authority at a time when his approval ratings are at an all-time low and his country is in the throes of economic problems similar to our own. But what a story. It is like the Charles Haughey bugging affair, but in fast forward.
